Coaching for Excellence: Lessons in Leadership, Accountability, and Mindset with Phil Beckner

In this episode of Stewards of Success, Jeff and Brent speak with Phil Beckner, an NBA player development coach and leadership consultant to elite athletes, leaders, and organizations. Beckner leads Driven Basketball, a private coaching company; Be Better. Be Different., a keynote and corporate leadership training business; and Be Better. Be Different. Legacy Foundation, a non-profit helping young adults build character and leadership skills.

Beckner shares what his coaching career has taught him about leadership, accountability, and personal growth, including:

  • Overcoming Mindset Hurdles: As Beckner puts it, “If you want to stay average, stay in the gray,” a common theme he observed coaching young elite players he labeled 50/50 guys, who were locked in only half the time. While everyone’s definition of success looks different, from hall-of-famers to rookies, only those players and leaders who can master their mindset, hold themselves accountable, and increase their capacity to work and focus will see results.
  • Self-Reflection: Leaders and coaches sometimes forget to look within as they strive to improve connections. Beckner admits, despite many winning seasons, he has sometimes missed the opportunity to lead with compassion off the court. To foster clarity and empathy, he often asks himself, “What is it like to be led by me?”
  • Building Trust: Like physical skills, trust takes time and consistency. Beckner suggests “being there before you get there”— preparing for tough conversations and conflicts before they happen. He emphasizes building relationship equity through reciprocal trust and ongoing investment. This strong foundation allows honest feedback and accountability to strengthen rather than threaten relationships.

Beckner ultimately wants to be remembered for helping others succeed on and off the court, as well as at work and at home. Later this year, he’s set to release a book that translates coaching keys and timeless truths into teachable strategies for a broad audience.

With over 10 years of coaching at the highest levels of college and professional basketball, Beckner is one of the most sought-after player development coaches in the country. Most recently, he has worked closely with a number of top sports teams and business organizations, including the Philadelphia 76ers, Texas Tech Men’s Basketball, United States Military Academy, Oregon Football, Blazer Electric, ZeroFox INC, and Apex Systems.
